When Marisa died, it started a long chain of solitary ‘firsts’.
Our first Christmas without Marisa, the first New Year’s, Jacoba’s birthday, Marisa’s mom and dad’s birthday, and now the start of the baseball season.
Marisa and I love the Blue Jays. Just last season, Zekijah went to more Blue Jay games than both my parents combined in their whole life. The Blue Jays had their opening day today against the hated Yankee’s.
The game was rained out.
I thought that was fitting.

Through the eyes of love, through the eyes of child-like faith I pray the “firsts” will be like seeds of love planted in heart-soil…forever nourished.

I love the Jays too.
I grew up without a TV in our house so on Blue Jay game nights I would bike over to this old family friend’s house (he was an eccentric retired newspaper editor) and we would watch the Jays together.
I loved those nights of watching TV, eating stale candies and then riding home in the twilight back to the farm. Good memories.
Peace of Christ to all of you.

Mendelt,
I was working in the greenhouse, cold and damp and raining,
We started to sing, ‘rainy days and mondays always get me down,
and had a laugh.
We love baseball and the Jays too! so indeed it was very fitting that
on a rainy, cold, damp, monday the Jays first game was rained out!
Maybe we’ll see you there!
Blessings……..we continue to pray

Totally fitting! In my times of grief, there were days when I wanted to yell at people for walking their dogs. “Can’t you see I’m grieving here???” But they didn’t stop, and they didn’t know. Maybe we all need a rain date once in a while.

Yes, that is so fitting , Mendelt, very. No Marisa, no opening day. Please see my blog for my Opening Day entry…funny how we gravitate to baseball, isn’t it. It is such a metaphor for life, the game of baseball, after all. You will see, that the day will come when you can sit in the ballpark again and feel ok. It has happened for me. Baseball makes life ok, again. It will for you, Mendelt, it will. Life cannot be bad when baseball is a part of it.
My older son, now age 25, used to say on new spring days, “it smells like baseball today”. You know that smell, right? You shall have it again, you will. It won’t be the same, but it will come, someday. The smell of sunshine, old leather, dirt, grass, hot dogs, sweat. Life can, and will, be good for you again.
